Homesickness

People mostly deal with homesickness with a simple phone call, skype date or travel plans back to their home country but I make daily phone calls to my mother and it hasn't helped me with coping with my homesickness. For about a month now I've been dealing with it in a different way and that is going to... McDonalds. (Call me a typical American if you want but in the USA I hardly frequented my local McD's) Usually, I visit my nearest  German McDonalds during the breakfast hour; because I've never been fond of their lunch/dinner menu since I'm not a meat eater and rather eat fries elsewhere since I am in the land of potatoes, and order two eggs McMuffins (minus the meat please) and a small coffee. I always sit and think about the past when my mother took my sister and I to McDonalds as little kids. It really helps me with my Homesickness... also I know how weird it may sound :( but it's helping. What are some ways you deal with Homesickness???

While I was living in Korea I never use McDonald's as a homesickness remedy because Korean food is so delicious compared to German food! Everything here is meat, fried, bread, dairy and fattening... So you're probably asking if I miss Korea and the answer is...... DEARLY. I miss the lifestyle, the people, the food and most of all my friends. Will I go back? Only if I am offered a University position! Okay that's all for now...

Like the Germans say Tschüss,

2013....

2012 started with an awesome trip to Malaysia and Thailand to Saying Goodbye to my friends in South Korea.. then surprising my mother in Florida.. to starting Graduate School in Germany. This past year has been exciting and fulfilling, I've made good friends and got rid of the "fake" friends. I'm not into New Years Resolution but I feel 2013 will be a good one.

Happy New Years,

How do people live in Germany....

It's just too cold.

Sorry for the lack of updates, I've been extremely busy with University, traveling, studying and hanging out with friends!!!

Two weeks ago, I got the chance to visit Berlin with my friend Thwarah for an Omani event!

Had an amazing time! Got to take part of a new culture and made new friends. <3

Then last week I visited Essen! because my Haitian friend invited me to her party~
Super fun...

And

It's been getting really cold in Siegen, makes me wonder, "How can people live in this weather".... Guess I am not in Miami anymore :D
Here's a picture I took yesterday outside of my flat while waiting for the bus.

Goodbyes are always hard

This week has been extremely busy for me (or maybe I need to manage my time better)because of school, hobbies and friends. Actually this week I was informed that one of my best friend; Yorusalem, is leaving for Canada on Monday.
We met about 6 months ago in class and have been inseparable since! :)
This is us on our way to Dusseldorf.

And us again during the summer in Siegen....

Last night, I had a going away for my friend. Pizza, Snacks, Wine and Soda was served.

I am really going to miss her :(

On other note, I'm currently working through the Assimil Russian book and have gotten up to Chapter 3. And been slacking with German :( :(

Thats all for now,

MissMartene

Life is short

Today started as a normal day of scoring two jackets at the "Flohmarkt" and having lunch with one of my really good friend, until my friend received a phone call from back home with bad news of the death of her father. One minute we were sharing laughter, jokes and ideas to the next of grief and despair, this is a perfect example of how life can dramatically change in any minute! Life is short, do what makes you happy because at the end it's only YOU!  Please keep my friend and her family in your prayers for strength during this time of grievance!

On another note my Russian journey is a tough one, I have yet mastered the Alphabet! But this video is helping me:

It has a really catchy tune! Hopefully by the end of this week, I'll have the alphabet mastered.

Kazakhstan

Even with my busy schedule of taking 8 classes (including a German class) all at an Masters level, I have found the time to enrich my mind with reading a book. The book I am currently reading is one that my friend let me borrow, he's also American and has has a deep fascination with Central Asia (especially Kazahstan) and the Russian language, now I know why!

"Apples are from Kazakhstan," is about  Kazakhstan from the eyes of a foreigner, who tries to comprehend the history and cultural aspects of Kazakhstan. To be quite honest, I never knew much about Kazakhstan except from it's geographical location, but now I have a desire to visit this wonderful county where apples originated from!

I also started something quite "crazy" in a sense and have been teaching myself a bit of Russian (I am currently listening to Assimil Russian while writing this blog), I don't know how long this will last but I am enjoying the journey thus far!

So my advice, is to go out and learn about another Country/cultural or language because it's very liberating.
